Writing for International Journals - Spring 2012

Writing for International Journals is a workshop for scholars at Lillehammer University College. The goal of the workshop is to provide guidance and practice in writing academic texts for publication in international journals. The workshop will also provide practice in academic discussions and conversations in English.

During the workshop, you will be working with your own text, so it is important that you have a text-in-progress to bring. You will also share your writing with the rest of the group, and provide feedback on the texts of other participants. Participants will be expected to work on their texts between workshop sessions and complete the assigned readings (short excerpts from texts listed below).

The workshop will be small, with a maximum of ten participants.

Topics that will be discussed during the workshop include:

  • Journal analysis – how do I know what the journal I am submitting to is looking for?
  • Academic writing as a genre – conventions, expectations, rhetorical principles
  • Academic language (vocabulary, levels of formality, directness, conciseness)
  • Structure and organization
  • Providing feedback and comments for other writers
  • Avoiding common grammatical errors

The course structure also leaves room for discussion of topics that emerge throughout the semester.

Dates:

  • Brief information meeting: 13/2, 11:30 – 12:30 in Drotten (bring your lunch!)
  • Session 1: 22/2, 10:00 – 14:00
