Emnebeskrivelse

This course provides an introduction to how disability has been defined in various historical periods and presents different theoretical approaches to disability (medical, relational, social, administrative, post-modern). It will focus on social ideologies, structural forces, power, cultural systems, and societal arrangements that have shaped the meaning and experience of disability.


Læringsutbytte

Learning outcomes

Students who complete the course will gain knowledge about:

  • different definitions or models of disability and disability identity, as well as critiques of those definitions or models.
  • debates concerning  the role of impairment/biology in defining disability
  • Mechanisms and structures of inclusion and exclusion faced by individuals with disabilities in relation to education, employment and access to health care;
  • disability and gender, class and ethnicity (intersectional perspectives)
  • discrimination and anti-discrimination

Undervisnings- og læringsmetode

Methods of instruction include lectures, seminar work, group work, oral presentations and literature studies.




Arbeidskrav

Compulsory work requirements:

  • One literature review of a central area of the curriculum (defined in cooperation with the responsible teacher) 
  • One oral presentation of the literature review
