Emnebeskrivelse

The course in Sport Psychology offers a general introduction to the growing field of sport and exercise psychology. Students will gain an understanding of how psychological factors influence performance and exercise for groups and individuals, and how these processes and factors are influenced by the participants’ experiences within their sports.

Students will gain an in depth understanding on how emotion, arousal, stress and regulatory behaviors influence people's behaviors within the sports realm.

The course will also give an overview of both individual and situational factors that influence performance, developmental issues, adherence, and behaviors within sports and exercise.

Major topics include: neuropsychological aspects of motor learning; individual, group and environmental factors on performance; cognitive functioning; emotion, arousal, stress and regulation effects on behaviors; performance enhancing strategies; and enhancing health and well-being. Students will also learn research methods, use research tools, and produce reports based on psychological tests that are pertinent to sport and exercise psychology.

Knowledge objectives

Students will:

  • Acquire knowledge about theoretical approaches to and explanations of performance for individuals and teams
  • Understand  the psycho-physiological processes in sports and exercise
  • Know how motivation can be influenced in athletes and teams
  • Know how individual differences and experience influence performance
  • Understand and be able to describe how arousal, emotional-regulation and stress influence athletes
  • Become familiar with measurement and research methods within sport psychology
  • Know how to assess specific sport psychological factors
  • Understand health and well-being aspects of sports and exercise

Skill objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Explain terminology and theoretical approaches within sport psychology
  • Discuss theories and empirical research findings analytically and critically
  • Understand how biological, social and environmental factors influence performance
  • Develop an understanding and use of measurement tools within sport psychology
  • Plan, implement, analyze, and report quantifiable measures
  • Be able to plan performance enhancing and health promotion strategies

General competence

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • Know theoretical concepts of Sport Psychology
  • Understand and be able to communicate the interplay and interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors on performance
  • Be able to measure and report specific profiling tools
  • Be able to produce intervention plans or research projects within sport psychology

Undervisnings- og læringsmetode

Lectures, seminars, practical exercises and assessments, collaborative learning, problem-based learning, supervision, laboratory exercises.


Forkunnskapskrav

Good proficiency in English (both written and spoken)

A course in social sciences research methods (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Students will be required to gather data and analysis of data sets

Arbeidskrav

Students will be required to submit a term paper from a topic in sport psychology of their choice (1500 words).

Mandatory participation in seminars and a group based presentation (in English) based on research conducted by students will also be required by students.


Eksamensform

The course is graded on the basis of:

  • A school based multiple choice examination (30% of grade)

and

  • a two week home exam (70% of grade)
