The course is part of the summer school program between Lillehammer University College and Presbyterian College (USA). Each school will recruit students to the course. The course is part of a total of 15 ECTS summer school program, and will be taken jointly with the Cross-Cultural Childhood and Adolescent Development Course (7,5 ECTS).  Students participating in the course will also commit to social activities that will go outside of the course, together with students from Presbyterian College. 

The course gives an in-depth understanding of the psychosocial cognitive processes in children and adolescents in respect to developmental aspects of personal, school, and family influences from different cultural viewpoints and backgrounds. . Students will gain an understanding of how the interaction of psychosocial factors, such as individual dispositions, learning environments, and resilience factors, influence development in cultures from North-America, Europe and Asia. Students will gain in-depth understanding theoretical and applied aspects of the psychosocial processes through didactic discussion with experts within the field from North American, European, and Asian countries. 


Knowledge objectives

Students will

  • Acquire knowledge about theoretical and cultural approaches to and explanations of childhood development
  • Understand the ethical issues of childhood and adolescent psychosocial interactions of individual differences, learning environments and assessment methods used in different cultures
  • Understand how to integrate cultural aspects into design of interventions that influence psychosocial development in children and adolescents
  • Understand the cultural and applied aspects of mapping and intervention tools and its capabilities and limitations

Skill objectives

Students will be able to

  • Explain differences, terminology and theoretical approaches within developmental psychology
  • Discuss and compare differences in cultural approaches, theories and empirical research findings analytically and critically
  • Understand how developmental factors, including biological, social and environmental factors, and cultural, influence psychosocial functioning of children
  • Be able to include cultural psychosocial developmental viewpoints into interventions

General competence

Upon completion of the course, students will

  • Know theoretical concepts and applied aspects of cross-cultural developmental psychology
  • Understand and be able to communicate the interplay and interaction between cultural,  psychosocial, and environmental factors on development
  • Be able to critically analyze and discuss cultural differences in development of children
  • Understand and compare culture differences to ethical approaches to childhood development 

Undervisnings- og læringsmetode

Lectures, seminars, practical exercises and assessments, collaborative learning, problem-based learning, supervision, laboratory exercises.


Students admitted to and that have completed the first year of Bachelor of Psychological Science (BA Psykologi) at Lillehammer University College and to approved BSc/BA psychology programs
