The topic of study will give an introduction to theories of leadership and organization, particularly with a focus on the Scandinavian/Nordic way of arranging organizations and leadership.

This course will present the frameworks for organizations that contribute to explaining that there is a Scandinavian approach to organization and leadership. This view accounts for, among others, welfare regimes and systems, the democratic, pluralistic model of partners that forms the foundation of working life, and cooperation between the work parties.

With respect to leadership, it is significant to talk about a distinct Scandinavian style of leadership, one that is different from styles of leadership in other countries and areas. The primary characteristics are:

 

  • a style of leadership that is informal, inclusive, and fair,
  • the accompaniment of generally flattened hierarchies, and small differences in salaries and few fringe benefits,
  • a consensus-orientated, participatory, and inclusive approach to decision-making and processes of change,
  • a resistance among most leaders against exerting their own power, an inclination towards rational and calm persuasion, rather than charismatic dominance, and
  • an increasing focus on the market or customer, or both, that encourages cooperation across hierarchies and between different departments.

 

Furthermore, it is central and illuminating to try to understand how both the framework factors together with aspects of leadership are reflected in the organizational elements.

Læringsmål

The students will acquire knowledge and understanding of how organizations function and of issues related to leadership and control in modern Nordic operations. Further, the students will gain knowledge, analytic skills, and approaches that will prepare them to work independently, critically, and strategically with different problems tied to organization and leadership within different Nordic public, private, and voluntary organizations.
